Things To Do
For
nature lovers: There are scenic hiking trails at Cutler's Bold
Coast, Moosehorn Wildlife Refuge, Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge, and
Great Wass Island. There are also hiking trials at Quoddy Head State
Park which is the eastern most point in the United States. Jasper
Beach is a rare, geological phenomenon located in Machiasport.
Also
available in the area are whale watching tours and boat trips to
Machias Seal Island where you can visit the nesting puffins, terns,
and other seabirds. Sea kayaking tours provide another way to
experience the rugged coastline and to explore ancient petroglyph
sites.
Of
historic interest: In addition to our historic Gardner House, there is the former summer home of Franklin D. Roosevelt
on nearby Campobello Island and the 1770 Burnham Tavern in
Machias. The Gates House, home of the Machiasport Historical
Society, overlooks the site of the first naval battle of the
American Revolution which took place in Machias Bay in 1775.
For
families: There are golf courses, beaches for either fresh or
salt-water swimming, public boat landings, and some of the best
fishing spots in the northeast. |
